VicRoads test prep

VicRoads 考试准备

A short guide to what examiners look for. We practise these in lessons and mock tests — knowing the checklist is not the same as doing it calmly on the day.

Overview

How the test works

Stage 1 ~10 minutes Quieter roads. If you do not pass Stage 1, Stage 2 does not start.
Stage 2 ~20 minutes Busier traffic. Only if Stage 1 is successful.
  • More than one serious error in Stage 1, or more than two in the whole test, is not successful
  • Some mistakes end the test immediately — for example failing to give way, speeding, not stopping at a Stop sign or red light, or the instructor or examiner having to take over
  • Every route includes a reverse parallel park or a three-point turn
  • Lane changes and a straight drive

Before the test

Car pre-check

This happens before the Drive Test starts. It is not scored — but if the first items fail, you cannot sit the test. Set your seat and mirrors first.

  1. 1
    Operate these controls
Indicators Brake lights Horn Low / high beam Hazards Washers & wipers
  2. 2Identify the handbrake
  3. 3Point to the front and rear demisters — do not turn them on
  4. 4Start the engine. Leave low beam on for the whole test

Manoeuvre

Reverse parallel park

Kerbside reverse parallel park — not a parking bay. Look out the rear window just before you reverse.

  • Signal at least 3 seconds before stopping beside the parked car, and keep the signal on while you set up
  • Finish in no more than 4 movements and within 2 minutes (unless traffic makes that unreasonable)
  • Do not reverse more than 7 metres behind the car in front
  • Finish with both left wheels within 300 mm of the kerb, and the front of your car 1–2 metres behind the car in front
  • A light tyre touch is OK. A heavy hit, or any wheel mounting the kerb, is not
  • When leaving: signal, then a head check immediately before you move. One reverse (if needed) and one forward

Manoeuvre

Three-point turn

You choose: pull over left first or not, and kerb-to-kerb or a driveway. Stay off private property.

  • If you pull over first, stop parallel and within 300 mm of the left kerb, and signal before you pull over
  • Look both ways before crossing to the right, before reversing, and look where you are going while reversing
  • Signal before you move across to the right. If you use a driveway, do not enter private property
  • A light tyre touch is OK. Do not hit the kerb hard or mount it. Drive off on the correct side
  • Finish within 2 minutes, and only cross to the right once

Examples only — not a full list

Mistakes that fail the test

Other errors can also fail the test. These apply at every centre — Bundoora, Carlton, Heatherton, and Mitcham.

  • No head check — look over your shoulder through the side windows (not the rear window) immediately before leaving the kerb or changing lanes
  • No signal at all when leaving a parked position is a serious error — and ends the test if someone else has to brake or swerve. Aim for at least 5 seconds; a short signal loses marks, it does not end the test by itself
  • Stop sign: wheels must be fully still, behind the line (within 2 metres). Rolling through is a serious error. Missing the stop altogether ends the test. Give Way: you must look — you do not always have to stop
  • School zone during signed hours: any speed over the limit, even briefly, ends the test. Elsewhere, 5 km/h over, or over the limit for 5 seconds, also ends the test
  • Stopping on a pedestrian crossing, or not giving way so someone else has to brake or swerve

Practise this in the car I cover your test area in lessons and mock tests — Bundoora, Carlton, Heatherton, and Mitcham. The test-day package is a warm-up before you go in. If you live far from the centre, there may not be time for a full route on the day.

Treat this as a reminder. These points need real practice until they become automatic — that is what holds when you are nervous on the day.
